Chevrolet Repair: wheel baring replacement, cotter pin, wheel barings

Question
I was wondering if you could walk me through the steps of replacing the front end wheel barings on my 94 chevrolet 2 wheel drive 1/2 ton pickup.  I plan to tackle this job later this week and want to make sure i am doing it correctly.
thanks,
Joe Lechner

Answer
Hi Joe, This is a easy but messy job. You will need a bearing race driver set to get the correct driver to install the outer races for the bearings. You will also need a long punch to remove the old races from the rotor. To remove clean off all the grease, now look through the rotor at the back side of the bearing race and locate the 2 spots that you can get a punch on the race to drive it out. Remove the races, clean the rotor out and drive in new races. Pack the new bearings with grease and put a small amount of grease on the races. Install a new seal and install the rotor. When adjusting the nut for the bearings don't over tighten!! light pressure while turning the rotor with the other hand. When the rotor stops, back the nut off and now just tighten with just a little more than you could with your fingers. Now back it off to the first hole and install new cotter pin.
