Chevrolet Repair: Starts with difficulty when warm., amp meter, battery cables

Question
Mark,

I own a 1989 Chevy S 10 Blazer with a 4.3 L engine and 120,000 miles. Last winter I had a rebuilt motor ( Jasper ) installed as well as a rebuilt starter, new battery and battery cables. There are about 3000 miles on the new rebuilt engine. Here's the problem. It cranks fine, starts up fine when cold, but if I shut off the vehicle when warm and attempt to re start, it cranks 3-4 times very slowly before it starts. Both warm and cold, once the vehicle is started, it runs great..as you would expect of a new rebuilt engine. The factory service book shows no starter heat shield either external or internal. My regular mechanic attempted to retard the timing to lessen this condition....this did not help. He also does not believe shimming the starter motor would help. A friend of mine with a voltmeter hooked it up to the battery when I was cranking it warm.....says it was putting out 10 volts. Any help or advice here would be appreciated!  Thanks!

Pete

Answer
Hi Pete, This sounds like a starter with high amp draw when hot. If you have access to a amp meter you can test the amp draw when this is happening. Should be around 120 to 180 amps. Be sure to get the timing set where it should be too.
