Chevrolet Repair: ignition coil, oil filler cap, valve rocker

Question
I was driving to work and my truck just died and wont start back up.It has gas.I opened the oil fill cap and had my girlfriend try to start and the valves were moving so i'm guessing the timing is alright. The problem I found is its getting no fire but its getting power to the coil.I changed the coil and still cant get the coil to fire. What would make the coil not fire when it is getting power and is brand new? My vehicle is A 1985 chevy S-10.

Answer
Hello Ross,
Looking in the oil filler cap hole, the most you can see is about two valve rocker arms, and from that view, there is no way on earth to tell if they are in time.
The most that can say is the timing belt, if one is even used on that engine, isn't broken in two.
The HEI module is ONE thing that would keep spark from happening, as well as all the other items...pole piece, pickup, etc in the distributor, as well as the distributor drive gear.
If the rotor is turning, then the drive gear is probably ok, cause it would allow a spark, even if out of time.
So just guessing from here...I would guess at the pickup coil, but I would sure recommend more testing before running down and buying a new one.
Make sure that power is getting to the coil WHILE it is cranking.
