Chevrolet Repair: Float sticking in carb, conversion van, chevy c20

Haynes Imanual).I accelerated hard one day to get over this steep grade and on the way down the motor sputtered and died.I started smelling gas and removed the cover.The carb was loading up with gas and floodingI have a 1985 Chevy C20 conversion van with a 305 4bll carb(I believe it is a Rochester,according to the  all over the top of the carb.My neighbor told me the float is sticking and can only be fixed by taking the carb off and apart to get to it.is he right and is there any other way this problem can be fixed without all that? Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi Jack, He is somewhat correct. You might want to try this first, Pinch off the rubber fuel hose going to the fuel pump and run the engine until it stalls out. This might take a few minutes. Now remove the clamp from the rubber hose and start the engine, This might repair the problem. Sometimes dirt will get into the needle and seat keeping the fuel from shutting off.
