Chevrolet Repair: rack and pinion, chevy lumina, axle assembly

I have a chevy lumina '92 v-6 and I was told  I need a new rack and pinion. I was wondering how dangerous is it for me to drive this vehicle, until  I get this problem fixed?

rack and pinion? sounds like an item of a resurant menu.. anyhow, yes it can be bad but it depends how bad the damage acutlly is. that is the steering and front end bits. it could go out at anytime anywhere so i would get it fixed or go back to another mechanic and get a second opion on how bad it really is and then decide from there. my dad had a car witha bad rack and pinion on it, drove it anyhow and one day right in the middle of an intersection the whole front axle assembly came right off. now weather that had anything to do with the rack is anyones gues. but what a ride. he later sold it about 30 mins later to a kid for $35, THE WHOLE CAR. the kid called a freind put them roling jack under it and pushed it 3 blocks to his garage and last i heard , he got it fixed.. keep me posted..
