Chevrolet Repair: Brakes, rear disc brakes, chevy blazer

Question
Mr. Bisig,
I recently purchased a 1998 Chevy Blazer, 6cyl, 4.3liter, 4x4.  Soon after I started to drive the car I heard a chiming sound coming from the driver side front brake.  I do not hear any noise other than that and I do not have any trouble braking. Although, the steering wheel does shake just a little when I brake. I had the brakes inspected and the auto mechanic said that I need front and rear breaks, rotors, pads, and shoes.  This is going to cost me, not including labor, about $700.  I had the car re-examined by a German auto repair shop and that mechanic says I only need brake shoes and that the chime coming from the front is probably caused by some corrosion on the rotor because the car was sitting for a few weeks. He thinks that I only require brake shoes.  If I plan to only have the brakes shoes done on all four wheels, what should I order off line?  I can't seem to find anything that reads brake shoes?  Also, what is the difference between the brake pads and the brake shoes?  I would also like to know what you think the real problem is.  I do not hear the noise when I break, only a slight metal against metal sound while I am driving.  Thank you so very much for your help.

Answer
Hi Keisha, This truck has front and rear disc brakes. It uses PADS on both the front and rear. If your going to have the job done I would replace ALL (4) rotors. You should call around to find the best price on rotors. Call Autozone, Parts Plus etc..  You could spend any where from 500 to 200 for rotors depending on which brand. Go with the cheaper ones they work fine.
