Chevrolet Repair: No start, chevy astro van, chevy astro

Question
Hello-  I have a 1992 Chevy Astro van...lots of miles but it always served me well.  Suddenly, it will not start.  All I could hear is a small click, but no cranck.  The starter makes no attempt to cranck the engine at all.  My battery shows about 12 volts. I think this is a bit low. I tried to jump start without success...just a click and no cranck. Before I replace the starter, could the battery still be the problem even though the jump start did not work ? I do not have extensive test tools..just average, including a digital multimeter.  Thanks for any advice.

Answer
What I would suggest is remove the battery, and have it tested, at your nearest auto zone. If it checks out, clean the batterys cables and try starting it. If it doesnt start, and all you get is a click, then its possible the starter is bad. You could also remove the starter, and have that tested, to before spending alot of cash in repairs..
