QuestionQUESTION: I recently added a GPS device to my 2006 Chrysler 300 and tapped the security system wire. The car locked down and wont start even after removing the GPS device. I had a mechanic look at it and he said there is a security issue and I need to find the rest protocol for this model from the dealership or pay up to $1000 to get it fixed through the dealer.The indicator he told me was that the little round security light comes on for 6 blinks when I try to start the vehicle then goes out. I only have one key for this vehicle as I bought it used. Can I fix this by myself?

What is the color of the security system wire that you tapped and where is it located?
Are you sure that you successfully returned the wiring to its original status?
What is the status of the security system light near the instrument cluster as it sits. Other than the six flashes does it do anything else when ignition switch is off?
Do you have the remote keyless entry module, and also an original ignition key with the bulge in the key handle?
I am not clear what the "rest protocol" is that the mechanic suggested. Did the mechanic come to your house to check it out since it won't start?
When you say 'locked down' what do you mean: starter won't turn the engine, starter will turn the engine but won't start, or engine starts but dies in a couple of seconds?
The system does have self-diagnostic capability by means of a plug-in fault code reader and there are a couple of dozen possible "body" fault codes that if we knew which one is stored could tell us what to do. Usually that involves plugging in a fault code reader that can extract the "body" fault codes so see if you can borrow one. It plugs into a socket under the dash next to the steering column. Let me know if you get such a B code (B followed by 4 digits).

Try turning the ignition key: "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window to see if the mileage reading changes to show a four digit number preceded by a P or a B.

QUESTION: My mechanic also tried to get an OBD reading on this car, when he looked at it, but he couldn't get a reading, in fact it turned off is OBD reading device.

I am not sure what to make of that. It does suggest that the power supply that comes to the plug-in port is not there and that is why his code reader "turned off". Check to see if you have 12V on pin 16 of the diagnostic connector plug, and if not check fuse #8 in the power distribution center in the trunk. That fuse powers the ignition switch so if that is blown that would explain why the vehicle appears to you to be locked down!
After you sort out the fuse 8 question: Why not try the do it yourself code readout approach using the ignition key and see what comes out that way?
