Chrysler Repair: crankshaft sprocket locked up: 3.5L

Question
I have a Chrysler 300 3.5L. And the crank sprocket is stuck. What can I do? I am using the the right tool. But it isn't moving

Answer
Hi Martinez,
That engine has 4 valves per cylinder and they overlap into the same area of each cylinder as does the piston head, and so they must move in synchrony with the pistons at all times because if not then the valves can come in contact with the pistons and thus get damaged which then "locks up" some of the valves from rotating. The timing belt keeps the valves and the pistons in synchrony. If it breaks while the engine is off or when you tried the starter then perhaps no damage has been done.
If that happens while you are in motion, then damage is very likely. If you were lucky and this occurred just when you tried to start the engine that the timing belt (which synchronizes the movements) broke then the 'collision' between piston and valve didn't do damage but because the valves don't move unless the belt is working then the a piston is hitting a valve that prevents it from moving and that prevents the crankshaft from rotating.  This will happen when the timing belt slips in relationship to the camshaft sprockets so the synchronization is disturbed.  That timing belt damage likely occurs when the mileage that the engine has gone without changing the timing belt exceeds 150,000 miles more or less. You may not have been warned about having to replace the belt periodically when you bought the car.
You might be able to observe the condition of the belt by removing enough of the bolts on the right side timing belt cover (the passenger side of the engine) to sneak a peek inside to see if the belt is loose/broken. The actual removal of the timing belt covers requires more items to be removed before you can replace it, and if it is indeed loose/broken then you will need to take try replacing the belt and see whether the engine will then rotate properly and if not, then damage to the valves has occurred.
Tell me the "history" of this situation.
Perhaps I can send a copy of pages from the shop manual that will tell you how to replace the timing belt, but I need to know your email address. Also, what is the model year of the vehicle?
