Chrysler Repair: trunk wont close:

Question
QUESTION: Sebring 2004 convertible.  Trunk will not close. Have tried fob, key etc to see if moving part is broken.  Get electrical rrrrr sound when using fob or dash release.  Is this a do it your self fix or my local mechanic or God forbid a dealer fix? The trunk light is on and killed my battery.

ANSWER: Hi Jan,
My '04 service manual describes the trunk (deck lid) but it doesn't mention anything about there being a motor that closes it.  Do you mean that when you close the lid by hand that it won't latch shut? If so, then I can copy the pages about the deck lid latch mechanism (which does have an electrical aspect to release it to open the latch) and how to remove and adjust it. You can then look those over yourself and take them a local mechanic where he should be able to repair the latch mechanism or the electrical aspect of it using those pages.
To send you the pages directly, by email, I need to know your email address. So send a follow-up question where you tell me that address. Don't use the "@" symbol but instead use "at" otherwise the address will be automatically erased.
Please read the PS (below) and respond to it.
Thanks,
Roland

QUESTION: Roland, thanks.  I was thrilled to get such a speedy reply.  Yes, the trunk will not latch when pushed down.  My email address is samandjanatcableone.net6n7gf

ANSWER: Hi Jan,
I copied and attempted to send the pages but got a response that they could not be delivered.
Would you look again at the address you gave me and let me know if that is correct. You did put it in using 'at' as I requested but there may be a typo.
The four pages I want to send you show the decklid latch and striker which are adjustable as to their location which is probably all that needs to be done to fix this, and you may well be able to do that yourselves. I don't understand why there is any sound coming from the trunk when you try to close it, but maybe adjustment of the latch/striker will solve this.
Thanks for the rating and nomination and if you would do both again I would be most appreciative.
Roland

QUESTION: Roland, I get the sound when I use the fob or dash release.  I hear it in the mechanism on the trunk.  It sounds electrical.  Sorry about the email mess up.   samandjanatcableone.net

Answer
Hi Jan,
I just sent the pages and it appears they will reach you. You are hearing the device that releases the deck latch to allow it open. That sounds normal to me.
Your problem is likely that the latch on the inside of the lid and the striker on the inner edge of the trunk are not adjusted properly to one another so that when you close the lid the latch and striker don't mesh together. Both of those parts are adjustable. I would start by moving the striker upward to see if the connection will then be made.
Thanks for the rating and nomination. Please do them again if you feel so-moved.
