Chrysler Repair: engine hesitation when starting, engine hesitation, autoparts store

Question
I have a 1999 lhs. What would cause the engine when starting the vehicle hesitate like it is starving for fuel occasionally not allthe time.

Answer
Hi John,
See if you can get a fault code readout using the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window of the cluster to see if the mileage reading is replaced by 4-digit number preceded by a P. Let me know of any.
Aside from that approach, a common problem as you describe, or a similar stalling out when slowing to a stop, is usually caused by an egr valve that is not closing tightly at shut down or when you take your foot off the gas. It leans out the mixture too much to sustain an idle. The valve would need to be removed and cleaned out and checked for free movement of the valve stem and lubrication thereof. But first see if you can get any codes, If nothing appears in the window then go to a nationwide autoparts store such as Autozone where they often will do a free readout using a plug-in code reader that attaches to a socket under the dash by the steering column.
