Chrysler Repair: 02 minivan diesel: no starter/no glow plug light, chrysler voyager, immobilizer system

Question
QUESTION: Hi there, I wondered if you could help me please.

Our Chrysler has stopped working all of a sudden. We had parked the car overnight and the next morning it did not start.

The car is a 2002 Chrysler Voyager diesel engine. When we tried to start the car all the lights turned on except the glow plug light which did not come on and also the car did not start.

There was no noise in the car to indicate that it was even attempting to start the car. Please can you advise as to what the problem might be and how it can be fixed?

It's definitely not a battery issue as we have checked that.

Many thanks for your time and assistance.

ANSWER: Hi Fatima,
The fuse that powers the glow plug relay is  #16 (25 amp) located next to the ecm/pcm relay and the starter motor relay in the front-inboard corner of the power box under the bonnet. The starter system needs to have  funcional fuses #9 and #23 (40 amp and 10 amp) so check those as well. The 9 is also near the starter relay, while the 23 is on the outboard side of the box near the lift pump relay. Let me know if those are all working and we can then look for another explanation.

QUESTION: Thanks for your reply.

We have checked all the fuses and the relays, all seems okay, the battery is all charged too but still no glow plug light.

The imobiliser light now stays on which happened after the mechanic bypassed the starter motor.

There is no noise to indicate the pump is energizing.

Thank you for your help and I await your reply.

ANSWER: Hi Fatima,
It may well be that the problem is a fault in the immobilizer system. Try to lock, then unlock either front door lock, using the key to see if that turns off the immobilizer light. The way the system works is that after 6 tries to start the vehicle when it is in the alarmed state it will no longer crank the engine until the alarmed state is cancelled.
If that doesn't work, then try turning the ignition switch:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window to see if the kilometer reading changes to show any four digit numbers which would be codes about what is the fault. Tell me the numbers and we'll go from there.

QUESTION: Hi Roland,

We did this and it still does not work, it only shows the mileage. What would you advise as the next step?

Thanks

Answer
Hi Fatima,
Ideally the odometer would have at least changed momentarily to show 'done' which corroborates that a readout of the engine controller memory for fault codes was accomplished. Try the key one more time, as I described, where by 'on' I mean the normal position of the key once the engine has started.
If you don't get any codes that way, then a plug-in code reader should be tried. There is a 16-pin socket under the dash and it could either be near the steering column (where it is on a left-hand drive vehicle, where as on a right-hand drive it could be at the mirror image location on the passenger side, I juat am not sure) but where such a reader can be plugged into to directly communicate with the memory. See if you get any codes that way. I don't see any other simple diagnostic approach at this point.
