Chrysler Repair: BCM Replacement: will the engine start?, digital communication system, vtss

Question
QUESTION: I am replacing the BCM on a 1998 Sebring convertible. The car is equipped with VTSS. I was told that if I do this myself, the car will not run due to the VTSS system not recognizing the new BCM. I will have to take it (tow it) to a dealer to get the BCM / PCM reprogrammed.

Can a BCM be replaced without causing a new host of Crysler - induced problems.

Thank you,

ANSWER: I believe that once the BCM is 'acquainted' properly to the vehicle using the diagnostic readout box at a dealer there should be no problems, and if there are the dealer should stand behind their install procedure at no cost. Are you certain that the bcm is bad? You might see how much you will save by installing it yourself versus having the dealer do it. It is not that big a job and that way the complete repair will be on their shoulders to stand behind.

QUESTION: Thanks for the prompt reply.

I want to install it myself. The question is - will I then have to take it to a dealer anyway to get it "acquainted" to the vehicle.

Answer
Hi Al,
Unfortunately yes, the diagnostic readout box at the dealer is necessary to match up the replacement bcm to the balance of the vehicle's digital communication system. And as you were told the engine will likely not start if you simply replace the bcm without having that interfacing done at the dealer. As I mentioned, the removal and installation is not so time consuming that it should cost that much more to just let the dealer do it because you will have to have them do the programming of the new bcm. Check it out by asking at the dealer first what the saving would be if you removed and installed it yourself and compare that to the cost of the tow.
