Chrysler Repair: 98 Sebring: rubbing noise at wheel/abs light on, wheel nuts, shock absorber

Question
98 sebring convert 2.5L  50,000 miles.  Car sat for years, but I have been running for 7 months
no probems.  Today, rubbing noise drivers front wheel - ABS light comes on.  Power steering fluid good.  Tire not rubbing.????

Answer
Hi Olwen,
After putting the vehicle in neutral and the parking brake 'on', put the trans in neutral, then loosen the wheel nuts a bit, and then jack up the left front wheel. It may be the case that the electrical cable from the abs wheel rotation sensor has looped outward and is rubbing on the inside surface of the tire. That can produce the rubbing sound and also it could have damaged the cable such that the abs sensor is no longer getting its signal to the abs control module which is why the light came 'on'. That cable should be routed (louped) toward the shock absorber so it won't have a tendency to loop outward and rub on the tire. Check for that possibility before you remove the wheel and tire. Check the cable to see if it is damaged electrically.
If the cable has been rubbed bare then you will need to replace the cable for the abs to work again.
If not, then remove the tire and wheel. You can then look on the rear side of the backing plate, to see the abs sensor (to which the cable is attached) and the slotted ring that is in close proximity to the head of the sensor. Rotate the hub to see where the rubbing is occuring. It may just be dirt on the tip of the abs sensor or the surface of slotted ring which rotates in close proximity to the tip that is causing the noise. You could then clean both surfaces to correct the problem if that is what it is.
Either the sensor cable is rubbing on the tire, or the sensor tip itself is rubbing on the ring.
