Chrysler Repair: Coolant leak on 98 3.8L engine, timing chain cover, coolant leak

Question
I have a 1998 Chrysler Town & Country with a 3.8L engine. I have a leak and I believe its either the timing chain cover or the water pump housing. The leak looks like a very small strand of water coming out.

Answer
Hi Deanna,
It could be a water pump seal beginning to leak. Unfortunately there is no simple 'fix'. About the only way to reduce it would be to let the concentration of antifreeze drop by only replacing it with water. Keep an eye on it and when the leak is more serious it will require pump replacement.  Fortunately on that engine the water pump is not driven by the timing chain so it is much easier to replace and at less cost.
If the leak is coming from the timing chain cover, then it would be some other sort of leak, such as a head gasket. So wipe away the fluid and oil and see if you can determine exactly where it is coming from.
Let me know if you have a further question.
