Chrysler Repair: 98 Sebring Convertable, fuel pump relay, spark plug wire

Question
QUESTION: We bought a 98 Sebring JXi convertible a few weeks ago. It has started and run flawlessly. This morning it turns over at normal speed with a couple of single kicks to start, but otherwise nothing. I drove it yesterday without a miss or hard start. The fuel gauge is near the red mark, but not empty that I know of. I am going start by putting some fuel in the tank and then removing a spark plug wire, putting a screw driver in the wire and seeing if a spark jumps the gap to the block. I have similar experience as you, I put new ignition coils in my 98 Caddie yesterday.

ANSWER: Hi Bob,
Try the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elased time. Then watch the odometer window for mileage reading to be replaced by fault codes. Let me know what you find. Check the egr valve to make sure the stem isn't sticking ajar slightly. If so lube the stem and move it to free up the action.

QUESTION: Hi Roland,
I couldn't get the fault codes to come up and the EGR seemed to be in good working order. I had great spark. I sprayed some ether into the intake and it started as if it was normal and ran until the ether ran out. I did it a few times with the same result. I listened for the fuel pump to prime (slight hum) for that 1 or 2 seconds that you hear in most cars now before it starts and heard nothing. I called the place where I bought the car last month and they are going to fix for no labor charge. AAA flat-bedded it to the place and I'll let them do the full diagnostics and drop the tank to replace the pump. Pretty smart of me, wouldn't you say? Thank you very much for your help.

Answer
You are welcome. The shop might want to check the fuel pump relay in the power distribution center under the hood (third socket from the front) which could explain no pump. Otherwise, I don't see a fuse being involved, so the pump is the next logical cause.  It is good you got some warranty.
