Chrysler Repair: stalling at idle: code 1398, camshaft position sensor, camshaft sensor

Question
i have asked u many questions on this matter..i have changed numerous parts. even took egr valve off today and got new one since it was still under warranty from parts store..guy at parts store told me he had this problem once on his car..i have a 98 cirrus 6 cylinder. it runs ok untill it gets warmed up then will stall at low rpms. runs ok at high rpms. he said it could be a timing belt stretching or slipping when car warms up. so i bought a new one. will change it next weekend. i have a code reader. it comes up with p1398 trouble code. this also means a camshaft position sensor. he told me this vehicle does not have one. if it is not the timing belt what else could it be

Answer
Hi Ron,
I am having trouble with my internet connection so let me be brief.
The 1398 has nothing to do with the camshaft sensor, but rather the crank sensor. It is not 'learning' the extent of the variation in the machining of the flex plate slots with sufficient accuracy.
The possible causes are wiring/connector of the sensor. Position of the sensor relative to the flexplate or its not being held firmly in place. I would suggest getting a new paper spacer for the sensor tip and reinstalling it. While you have it off rotate the crank and inspect the slots of the flex plate for damage/foreign matter/excessive movement (which could be due to excessive wear of the crank bearing). Then replacing the crank sensor is the next step. Finally replacing the PCM.
Also check the compression of the 6 cylinders to see if one or more is low. Those are the items to verify according to the manual and check after each to see if the code has gone.
