Chrysler Repair: Weird shifting o93 Concorde, solenoid pack, diagnostic cartridge

Question
I have a 93 concorde that basically runs okay but every once in a while it'll get stuck in a gear. It'll still go to park and neutral and drive without a problem but the rpms increase as I accelerate and only decrease when I brake. The weird part is if I turn the car off and immediately turn it back on it'll shift like normal again. putting the car in park and going back to drive has no effect. The car has to be turned off. I'm thinking sensor?

Answer
Hi Steve,
The gear that usually defaults to is 2nd gear as that is what happens when the transmission controller believes there is some sort of fault in the function of the transmission. It is called 'limp in mode' and its purpose is to use the least number of critical parts until the problem can be solved. It does this by disconnecting the power to the transmission relay which otherwise powers the solenoid pack.
It could be a sensor or it could be some part in the solenoid pack or even in the mechanicals of the transmission. The best thing to do is get readout of the transmission fault codes. There is a blue data link connector under the dash on the left side into which a fault code reader can be plugged and which will query the controller for fault codes. You would need to find a shop with a code reader that has the Chrysler data link connector plug and a diagnostic cartridge designed to readout the transmission codes of Chryslers. These are two-digit numbers, but they are a different set of fault numbers than are for the engine controller, so whoever does the readout had to bave the readout box that can communicate to the transmission controller to get its codes.
Find out the code numbers, ask what the title of the code is, ask what they would advise doing, and then get back to me with what you were told and we'll compare that to the shop manuals.
