Chrysler Repair: 03 Neon: Transmission Trouble Codes, solenoid pack, solenoid switch

Question
Good evening,
Having trans issues with this Neon (93K miles). Clicking noises from transaxle area in park / neutral, slippage in drive then hits low gear hard as engine revs up. Fluid on stick has orange tint, level is fine. Does not smell burnt. Acording to daughter started noise and shift problems this afternoon. No previous slippage we're aware of.
DTCs
P0700
P0732
P1775
P0733
P0846
P0740
What do you think with this limited info? Is this transaxle coming out?

TIA
Dave

Answer
Hi Dave,
The 0700 is a 'flag' that other transmission fault codes have been logged in the memory of the transmission controller.
The other codes are all specific to the transmission.
The 0732 abd 0733 say that there is slippage in 2nd and 3rd gear.
0740 and 1775 say that the torque converter lock-up feature (in top gear this eliminates slippage for better fuel economy)is not working due to either/both the clutch control electrical circuit and the solenoid switch valve for the lock-up is stuck in the latched position. This might be repaired by a remove and servicing/replacement of the solenoid pack located on the outseide of the transmission.
The 0846 says that the circuit which verifies the function of the 2/4 solenoid is faulty, again relating to the solenoid pack.
I am not certain what to make of the clicking sound but it may be due to one of the above issues. The slippage might also be due to the solenoid pack issues, but they might be due to wear on the internal clutches which do require removal and rebuild.
I would go to an independent shop (not a dealer or a chain) and see what they say based on the codes and sounds. It may be worth a try to just replace the solenoid/pressure switch 'pack' and see if that resolves the problem. If not, then do the removal and rebuild. The pack would probably be replaced in that rebuild job, so why not try that first? The labor to do it is not much compared to the rebuild so I would weigh the odds of success against the labor for doing the minimum job based upon the codes/sounds/opinion of the shop.
