Chrysler Repair: 88 Sundance: high idle speed, vacuum leak, proper ratio

Question
When i start my car the RPMs rev to about 4 to5 thousand and stay like that.

Answer
Hi Robert,
There may be a vacuum leak which allows air to enter the intake manifold, and the engine computer responds by putting in gas so as to keep the mixture in the proper ratio. It is the same as if you opened the throttle. So begin by looking for any hose that is related to the intake manifold that might be removed.
It is also possible that the throttle itself is stuck open so check for that on the throttle body. So remove the air intake housing (notice all the hose attachements on the underside and front) for a better look at the situation. There are three fasteners on the top that hold it in place but be sure to take if off slowly and peek underneath to be sure you see what goes where.
Finally, use the ignition key to get a code as to what might be wrong: "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light, which remains "on", to see it begin to flash, pause, flash, etc.  Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat the process to assure an accurate set of flash counts. Tell me the counts in the order of appearance and we'll go from there.
Tell me about which engine size you have in the car.
Roland
