Chrysler Repair: 2.7 rough running, 2002 dodge intrepid, wd 40

Question
I just replaced the water pump in my 2002 Dodge Intrepid 2.7L R vin. I removed timing chain etc. to get at water pump. I replaced all and timing marks were good. Started right up and idled fine. took it for a test drive and ran fine one mile to county road. picked up speed to 55mph when I let off gas pedal it started running rough. When I am throttling up or decelerating its fine but when I let off gas it sputters. At coast it runs rough as soon as I let off on the gas pedal. When I got back to my house and slowed to go in the driveway it was surging  like I was giving it gas then taking my foot off the pedal. Took it to a mechanic and he was getting a code for EGR. I had broken the ECT sensor when working on it and told him. He said he did see a fluctuation in temp on scanner of 195 degrees to 32 degrees and thought that may throw bad info to the brain. I replaced the ECT sensor and it ran great for 3 miles up to 60 mph and slowing down. When it got warm and I was going 55 mph and let off gas it sputtered and ran rough again. Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Mark,
I would 'listen' to the code readout as the egr, if sticking slightly ajar, will cause exactly what you are experiencing: poor acceleration at open throttle and stalling when off the throttle. I would be inclined to look closely the valve to see if there is any access to the valve stem near the valve body proper (on the earlier version there was but I haven't personally looked at the newer ones). If you see a valve stem (rod) spray some WD-40 on and if the rod has a slot to which you can put the tip of a screwdriver you can open and close the valve that way to free it up. If not accessible, then let me know and I can copy the pages from the '04 CD and email them to you which show how to remove the egr and clean out the passageways and that should allow you to get the head of the valve to move freely again and allow it to close tightly by its internal spring action. If you do follow-up, use the 'private' option, so that your email address isn't deleted from the message. I know the allexpert site requires that you give an email address but the expert doesn't see that.
