Chrysler Repair: Trac off/ ABS light, dirt buildup, tone wheel

Question
2000 Chrysler 300   All of a sudden Trac Off and ABS light pops on.  When I shut car off, light goes out but pops back on after a couple minutes

Answer
Hi Howard,
That is an indication that there is some sort of a fault in the ABS system. The controller for the system has stored a fault code in its memory which can be readout via a diagnotic readout box that connects to a socket under the dash next to the steering column. You may be able to get a free code readout as a nationwide auto parts store such as Autozone or an independent shop is likely to do it for under $40. Once you get the code ask what is means and what is recommended to do. Then let me know the fault code and we can compare what you were told to the manual for the system.
One of the most common causes of a code is dirt buildup on the wheel rotational sensor tip or the 'tone' wheel which it senses that is in close proximity to the sensor. So if you wanted to give a try by removing each wheel and cleaning the sensor and the wheel ring you might solve the problem. However the light will not go out until you have gone 3500 miles, but you should notice a restoration of the ABS function if you are successful. The light can be shut off (code erased) by means of the diagnostic tool used to readout the codes from the memory.
