Chrysler Repair: Sebring 02: trans damage diagnosis, solenoid pack, chrysler sebring

Question
I have a 2002 chrysler sebring that was fine.  I ran over a 5 gallon bucket, then the next day on the way to take it to the shop it started making this winding noise when i pressed the gas.  I drove about 10 blocks and had the first slip/jerk.  It did this twice before I pulled it into midas.  At midas they found that the air intake to the torque converter had come unplugged, they plugged it back in and didn't get any good codes from the diagnostic tool. The fluid was almost empty and not burnt, but still pink in color.  They referred me to a transmission shop. The tranny shop said it has internal damage and it would be a minimum of 1600 to rebuild it.  Someone told me that it could be the solenoid pack for the tranny and that it is located in the pan and you wouldn't even have to take the tranny out to replace it.  Do you have any advice as to whether it could be the solonoid pack? The shop never mentioned anything about this part. Thanks for your time. I appreciate your response. On the way to take it to the shop, the tranny didnt want to shift into second or third gear. Slipping and winding/screaming sound.

Answer
Hi Jessica,
The solenoid pack can be removed and replaced without removing the transmission. But I would try once again for a fault code readout which will tell you more clearly whether it will do any good to change the pack or do something different. Did you go to an independent transmission shop (not a nationwide chain which is set-up to sell you a rebuilt transmission rather than fix yours) and have them do the readout. Get the 4-digit codes, ask what they mean, then write back and we can compare what they said with what the shop manual says.

PS Sorry for the delay in responding but I just found your question in the 'pool' to which it had been referred by Kevin. Please 'rate' my answer, and where you see the question about 'volunteer of the month' consider giving a 'yes'. Thank you
