Chrysler Repair: Subframe Bushings--97 Chrysler LHS, subframe bushings, 97 chrysler lhs

Question
I was recently told that the subframe bushings on my 97 Chrysler LHS were about to fall off!  He claimed the job would take 6 hours.  My questions are:  what is a subframe bushing, and what does it do?  what are the chances that the bushings go bad on a car that has 119000 miles?  how long does something like this take for a qualified mechanic?  and what are the ramifications if the car does not get fixed?

Answer
Hi Mike,
The bushings as far as I can tell are probably those for the lower control arms or bushing for another closely suspension related part. I have the '94 and '98 manuals in hard copy and can xerox pages that show those part replacements. I also have the '04 manual on a CD which I can copy pages from and email them to you for review. I see the '04 are close enough to the '98 to give you an idea of what is involved. I wouldn't have any idea of time involvement. I suspect the issue would be how the vehicle moves down the road and steers but doubt it would be a safety critical issue. Road wandering sorts of issues are probably how it would be experienced.
