Chrysler Repair: BLEND AIR ACTUATOR:94 LH body, air actuator, push pin

Question
When i did use the heat last year I could turn the heater control to 60 degrees and hear it kick in and get cooler air (not using the AC) and when I put it on 90 degrees hear it kick in again and get real hot air which was great. Now when I do either one I don't hear nothing and no hot air but only outside air which is cold being 20 degrees outside. i do have warm air except for maybe about 3-5 seconds after the engine is warmed up which sucks a big deal. So my question is could it be the control switch that turns the degrees to 60-90 degrees or could it be the Air blend actuator that went out because I no longer hear it kick in like idle down when i turned it to 90 degrees and get really hot air like I want. My codes I came up with code 23 on the heater itself ATC not the check engine codes on the dash I have just code 55. So if I could get an idea where the air blend actuator is maybe I can do it myself also do I need to keep the door open or closed on it to have heat can't afford a new one. I figured whatever step its in now I just do the opposite like when i take it apart if its open then i would just close it.

Answer
Hi Carl,
Either the actuator is defective or the door is sticking in one position. Fortunately you can get to it for inspection/repair. Remove the lower edge of the dash on both sides which is called a silencer/duct. These are held in by 1 push-pin on the left, and 2 on the right side ducts. That will give you better access to the underside of the HVAC housing. The actuator is located directly above the center tunnel. There are two screws accessible from the right side of the tunnel, and one screw from the left side of the tunnel. The actuator and its wire connector will then drop down and out. Notice the position of the actuator as it will have to mesh with the door spline with which it mates when you reinsert it or the replacement actuator. You could try changing the temp setting to see if the actuator responds, and if not then it probably is at fault. If it moves positively then reach up and try to move the blend door spline to see if it is binding. Avoid breaking the door attachment as the entire housing will otherwise have to be removed to repair that.
