Chrysler Repair: power windows & door lock: 99 minivan, dodge grand caravan, zero volts

Question
QUESTION: 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan 130K

Passenger side power window was not working. Recently, the driver side power window gave up! I believe I need to change the regulator and motor assembly. Should I look for anything else before going ahead to replace these?

The driver side power lock is also not working. I believe it is the solenoid. Again, should I look for anything else before replacing it?

Thanks for your help in advance!

ANSWER: Hi Shafique,
You could check the fuse-like positive temp coefficient devices located in the fuse box under the dash in positions 8 and 9 as those power the windows. Then if you check the local switches to verify that these are showing 12v when action is requested and which reverses polarity depending upon whether you are asking for 'up or down' that would prove for lack of response that the motors are bad. The driver window motor is on pins 6 and 8 of the driver switch, and the passenger window is on pins 5 and 8 of the local switch. I believe there is a trim panel near the switches that can be pryed away gently which will reveal 2 screws that secure the switch panels to the trim panel. Then you can remove the switch panel from the door trim and test the pins.
To check the electric wiring of the right door lock, locate a 14-pin disconnect at the hinge (and at a level between the door hinges) where there is a brown/yellow wire on pin 10 which should either be grounded, or show 12v when you request 'lock' at the door lock.
Let me know if you would like some pages from the '98 manual that show how to remove the trim panel and how to replace the motor.
I can xerox and postal mail those to you. Just give me a postal address.

QUESTION: I got the time to check it today. This is what I have:
The pin 5 & 8 on passerger side show zero volts with windows switch in neutral position; when I press the windows switch, I get 12V and polarity changes if I am trying to move it up or down.
The pin 6 & 8 on driver side show constant 12V and do not change while window switch is engaged i.e. I try to move it up or down. I get zero volts if I open the rear vent; I am not sure what it means?

I think the motor on passerger side window is bad and something else is malfunctoining on the driver side window? If my diagnoses is right then what is next I should be looking for the driver side window.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Shafique,
It does appear that the passenger motor is bad.
On the driver side, it would appear that the switch contacts or a black box inside the switch called the 'express down module' is defective. To make sure, you could pull the connector on the switch and try jumping 12V and ground directly to pins 6 and 8 and then reversing the polarity to verify the motor is good. That would verify the motor. Then be sure that you have 12v on pins 9 and 11 of the connector itself to be certain of supply voltages that come from the positive temp coefficient devices in sockets 8 and 9 of the fuse box. I suspect that either that 'express module' or the switch contacts inside the switch are oxidized for that driver window switch. You could try spraying some electrical contact cleaner inside the switch to test for the contacts being the problem. If that doesn't give you alternating polatity at pins 6 and 8 when you try the driver window switch then you have to conclude a new switch is needed.
