Chrysler Repair: Transmisson problems, 4 digit numbers, minute max

Question
Strange question, it was cold this am about 30 degrees, and our 1996 Sebring Conv. V6 with about 220,000 miles sits outside in the weather.  Started the car up to warm up for about 10 minutes.  Got inside put it in reverse and pulled out of the driveway just fine, tried to put it in drive, the shifter moved, but the car was like it was in neutral.  Tried adjusting the shifter back and forth and put it in 1 to see if it would move forward it was like the car would not get into gear, finally put it in drive and pushed on the gas a couple of times and finally car went forward. Do you have any ideas?
Thank you
Cathy

Answer
Hi Cathy,
Check the level of fluid in the transmission. If needed add ATF+4 type ONLY, but don't overfill. I would not warm up a car for 10 minutes, rather about 1 minute max. before driving off. The old idea was to do what you did, but it is better to get under way promptly.
You could go to an Autozone part store (or other chain-type parts stores) and have them do a free code readout for any faults that the on-board computers might have noticed. These are 4-digit numbers. Tell me the numbers if there are any. An independent shop will do a readout but for about $40.
