Chrysler Repair: 2001 sebring 2.7: slow starting, safety purposes, egr valve

Question
Just bought one for my son. The only issue is it will take 3-5 seconds of cranking to start Is this just normal there are no codes

Thanks

Al

Answer
Hi Al,
No codes presents a problem. I have two ideas:
Clean the throat and idle side-air passageway of the throttle body, as well as both sides of the throttle butterfly plate. Crud in this area can make for hard starting.
The other item that might cause this is the egr valve which may be similarly cruddy and sticking slightly ajar which has the effect of leaning out the mixture which makes for hard/no starts.
Other than those, keep checking for fault codes and let me know how it works out. One final thought: try letting the key sit in the run position for a few seconds before turning to start just to see if it might have something to do with the fuel pump not getting the pressure up to speed. The fuel pump will run for a couple of seconds, but then it will be cut out for safety purposes. Then as soon as you start cranking it will start up again but you won't be able to hear over the noise from the starter motor.
