Chrysler Repair: 98 T&C body control module intermittent problems, drb iii, chrysler town and country

Question
QUESTION: i have a 1999 chrysler town and country i just changed the
body control module, i put on a used one the van started and
would die in a few seconds, i figured it had to do with the
alarm on the van. i disconnected the battery and put it back
on and tried it now i get nothing. i tried your idea about
unlock the door with the key still nothing. could the BCM be
reading the alarm code from its previous van that it came
out of.. ???  please help.. what to do..

ANSWER: Hi David,
That is correct. The use of a DRB III at a Chrysler dealer will be needed to bring the pcm and bcm into agreement to get the vehicle theft security system in alignment. Try putting the old one back in unless you no it to have failed and similarly prevented the engine from running. Why did you change it out?

QUESTION: i changed it out cause the gas gauge was jumping around the lights where flickering on and off, rear wiper would turn on when you turn the key on. now all of that is fixed now i have the new problem, oh and now the mileage is different that must be showing the mileage from the previous van is that right ??

ANSWER: Hi David,
That is correct. That would be corrected with the DRB III.
Because of the specific problems that you mentioned, I wonder whether the problem is NOT the bcm itself but rather that some water leaked down on the module and created some intermittent shorts between the pins on the plug which has pins 41-80. The fuel gauge/rear wiper/door open switch pins are grouped closely together in one area of that plug. Take a look at the old bcm and look for signs of dirt/moisture around the two pin rows that cover 41-60. You might even spray some electronic circuit board cleaner on the sockets to clean and evaporate any residual water. Then reinstall it and see if the problem is still there or not. Then you won't have to deal with getting the used bcm re-programmed.
Let me know if this helps.

QUESTION: well the van has been in the shop for a week and a half, they could not get it to start, they say i need to buy a new BCM that has no data on it so then they can set it up with the PCM to me that makes no since i think they just could not figure it out. what if i replaced the PCM from the same van as i got the BCM from would that be better, and would it still change my mileage back to what it is supposed to be.

Answer
The mileage is stored in the bcm so whatever it read when removed from a working vehicle would be what comes up on the odometer. I do believe you will have a better chance of solving this if you keep the bcm and pcm paired as they were originally at the time of manufacture. If the shop is not a Chrysler dealer they may not have the proper reader to solve the problem.
