Chrysler Repair: 04 Concorde: no speedometer, 2004 chrysler concorde, auto salvage yard

Question
QUESTION: My 1996 Speedometer for my  4DSD Chrysler Concorde is not working.  I was told that I need a new Instrument Panel cluster for it.  Chrysler would replace it for $1000.00.  Only the speedometer doesn't work, the other gauges do work. I went to get a replacement from an auto salvage yard but it didn't work either.  The salvage yard said it should work.  Still working with them and the repair shop.  Can you give me any help?  Maybe I have my car in the wrong repair shop.  Please help.

ANSWER: Hi Gloria,
Does the mileage reading (odometer) work? If not, then probably the issue has nothing to do with the speedometer but rather with the output speed sensor on the transmission.
I think you may have the car at the wrong shop... Go there and try your ignition key as follows:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 second or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light, which remain 'on', to see it begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat the process. Then group the numbers in pairs in the order of appearance to form the two digit fault code numbers. The last number is always 55 which means end of readout. If you get the number 15, that means the speed sensor needs to be replaced. It costs under $100 and should be installed with less than 1/2 hour of labor time. Tell me any other numbers.
Otherwise, let me know before you authorize anything major.

Roland  ----  My car is actually a 2004 Chrysler Concorde. I don't know why I originally wrote 1996. Didn't know if it made a difference or not.  Am including the original question in case my original message is not sent with my follow-up question.  The cluster was from a 2002 concorde. Thanks for all your help.....

Answer
Try the same ignition key trick, only this time watch the odometer window to see if the mileage reading changes to show a 4-digit number preceded by a P. If a number 0500 or 0501 appears that would point to the output speed sensor on the transmission. If no codes appear in the window, then ask the mechanic if he used a plug-in code reader to check for fault codes and if so what are they. If not, then you can get a free code readout at an Autozone parts store or similar nationwide parts chain store.  Lets see what comes out before authorizing any more repairs.
You didn't tell me whether the odometer does or doesn't work.
