Chrysler Repair: flexplate orientation, haynes repair manuals, dodge caravan

Question
QUESTION: I replaced my rear engine seal on my 98 dodge caravan (front wheel drive, 2.4 liter engine) but didn't pay close enough attention to which side of the flexplate was toward the engine. The flexplate has an indentation around the 8  mounting bolts, does this go toward the engine or toward the transaxle. Thanks for the help

ANSWER: Hi Clint,
The Haynes repair manuals clearly show the flex plate indented (what I would call countersunk) as seen when viewed from the transaxle (e.g. when the engine and trans have been separated you see it), so the indented side has to be toward the transaxle.

PS Sorry for the delay but I just found your question in the 'pool' to which Kevin had referred it.

QUESTION: Could I please get a little clarification on your answer. When you say the indented side has to be toward the transaxle do you mean the concave side or the convex side? Sorry for my lack of comprehension, I just want to be sure since I had it put together once but when I finished I couldn't turn the engine over. So I'm hoping it is just the flexplate jammed up against the engine(shroud) not allowing it to turn. It looks that way when I look up inside.

Answer
Hi Clint,
I can only tell you what it looks like in the Haynes photo, which is that the side facing the transmission has a flat outer ring of metal, and then a sunken central region with the bolt holes. I can't see the other side of the plate so that is a limitation on my answer.
