Chrysler Repair: surging ahead: 97 T&C, town and country chrysler, spark plug wires

Question
We have '97 Town and Country Chrysler van, recently we replaced spark plugs (last year) and spark plug wires hoping that stop the surge ahead whenever we accelerate. Sometimes so very roughly when have more weight in van.
It still surge ahead .... we recently replaced the mother board (used) .... now our back van door can not be open.

Answer
Hi Della,
The best thing to do about the surging is take advantage of the built-in self-diagnostic capability of the engine control computer. If it sees a faulty part it will give a fault code number and store that number in its memory. You may be able find out the number using the ignition switch.  But the '97 model year was trasitional between OBD-I and OBD-II code systems so you can't be certain how you can get a self-readout of the fault codes that might be stored in the engine controller which would detect such a problem and tell which sensor or other device has failed.
Try this first: Turn the key:'on-off-on-off-on and leave on' doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light, which remains 'on', to see it begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the flashes before each pause. Then repeat to be sure of an accurate set of flash counts. Let me know the flash counts in the order of appearance. If that approach doesn't work and there is an Autozone parts store within driving distance they will do a free code readout using a plug-in code reader. An independent shop will charge about $40 for the readout. One way or the other this is the most efficient, cost-effective, way to get a solution to the surging problem. Let us deal with the rear door later.
When you write back mention the size (L) of the engine which is shown on the top (valve cover) of the engine.
