Chrysler Repair: 99 Sebring Ignition Sys, crank sensor, primary resistance

Question
QUESTION: Roland,
I am a GM tech and need help with my wifes car. 99 Sebring 2.5L v6 no start. Checked for codes, no codes. Checked for spark at SP wires and no spark. Removed Dist Cap and checked for spark out of coil no spark. I do not have a diagnostic tree procedure for this car, so I don't know where to go from here. Would appreciate any help.

Thanks,
Frank

ANSWER: Hi Frank,
The spark coil primary resistance is 0.6-0.8 ohms and the secondary resistance is 12,500 to 18,000 ohms. There should be 5,000 ohm between the center button and spark tower connector in the distributor cap proper (although it looks like you don't have an issue with the cap per se).
The ASD should but 12V on pin 1 of the 2-way plug which is the primary winding power source, when you are cranking it. That also goes to pin 6 of the pcm .
PCM 4 to 6-way pin 6 is the primary driver.
6-way pin 5 should show a ground connection to chassis, 6-way pin 1 is the sensor ground wire to pcm 43
The cam sensor signal is pin 3 of the the 6-way to pin 33 at the pcm. If you measure between that wire and the sensor ground wire while turning it over by hand you should ses voltage pulsing between 5 and 0.3V.
Pin 2 of the 6-way should show 8V source for the sensor that comes from pin 44 of the pcm when the ignition is on.
Those are the basic connections of the spark circuit. It may be that the cam sensor is not producing a good enough pulse to cause the pcm to drive the primary, but still not so bad as to set a code 0340.
I hope this will suffice to help you resolve this.
All these numbers are for the Sebring convertible. If you have the coupe then some of the pin assignments are different.

QUESTION: The car is a JXI convertible. Does it have a cam and a crank sensor. Where are one or both located? The 2-way plug you are talking about is the one that plugs into side of distributor? If yes, it only has one pin / one wire, correct?

Answer
Hi Frank,
Yes, it also has a crank sensor, located on the firewall side of the engine, at the flex plate end of the engine, and mounted just above the transaxle differential housing. You would want to remove the speed control servo for easier access.
The cam sensor is the one I was describing which is in the distributor, which is the one that seems to not be sold separately unless you can get one on line from Asia. Thus the cost of that otherwise is around $300 for a rebuilt distributor, if it is bad! That 2-pin plug might well be a 1-pin on your distributor, because in any case that socket is only for the 12V primary winding, as I described it. So 2 or 1 pin it is the ASD output wire, dark green/orange. Let me know if you need the other wire colors.
