Chrysler Repair: 92 minivan: engine dies/stalls when slowing, plymouth grand voyager, crank sensor

Question
Hi Roland,

I have a 92 plymouth grand voyager SE 3.3L. to give you some background...I bought this van 6 months ago in cherry shape(75k miles)the inside was perfect as well. Roughly a week after i bought it i went outside to drive somewhere and the van would start but then die unless you gave it gas. i didnt know what to do so i fast idled it for a few mins let my foot of the gas and it to me sounded like it almost wanted to die again but stumbled slightly and then smoothed out. The van ran for weeks after that then randomly it felt like the engine would die for like a split second and then resume running perfect WHILE driving! The speedo even goes straight to zero then back to the speed im at and when this happens it obvious the whole carlurchs backword even my passengers are like what was that lol.also when i was at lower speeds i.e. coming to a stop or making a turn the van would die i would pop it into Neutral turn the key it would fire right back up then be fine for 5 mins to 5 days before anything would happen again. Now while driving i was coming to a stop and the van died like "usual" and this time will not start back up. No fuel No spark. If i jump the blue/yellow wire at the ASD reley to ground the fuel pump comes on i feel the relay click but still no spark while cranking. Attempted to test cam/crank sensor and im getting very small pulse like 50 Mv at the tan/yellow wire and constant but low voltage(50 Mv) on the orange wire from the CAM sensor. Also i have had the codes read with the obd-1 tool and have never had a code come up even when the van died at idle with the obd-1 tool plugged in.When i attempt the ON-OFF sequence to read codes i get nothing as well and the bulb is functional because it lights up when i turn the key on then shuts off a second later. Im sorry it was so long winded and I look forward to your thoughts on this matter. Thanks -Sam-

Answer
Hi Samuel,
Hi Sam,
There may be a couple of things going on. The trouble with getting it to idle at start up, and stalling when slowing may be simply that the egr valve is sticking slightly ajar at start up and as well when you slow down and instead of closing it lets exhaust gas into the manifold which leans out the mixture and the engine then stalls. Simply spraying somw WD-40 on the stem of the valve and working that back and forth with the tip of a screwdriver insterted in the slot of the stem will usually free-up the action. That egr hang-up doesn't usually set a fault code.
The other type of die off which seems total, especially with the loss of gauge reading, would make me think that there is a flakey connection in the ignition switch that is cutting out one of the several circuits that it powers. Of course it could also be a loose ground connection on one of the - clamp battery wires which would take out the engine or the body circuuts.
The A21 circuit that comes out of the ignition switch on a dark blue wire powers all the important systems that are needed for the engine and the ggauges, etc. You can check whether it is making contact at the very time of die off by checking at fuses 13, 14, or 15, in the box under the dash to see whether you have 12v on the fuse when compared to a chassis shiney metal surface nearby. Do that without touching the ignition key/switch so as to test whether my theory about the switch failure may be correct. That also would not set a fault code.
