Chrysler Repair: no spark 94 sundance 2.2L, crank sensor, spark coil

Question
QUESTION: i have no spark on a 94 sundance 2.2 it shut off on me in traffic and wont start. there is no spark and no power to the coil i checked with a test light. thats all i no so far any help would be appreciated thank you.

ANSWER: Hi Joe,
Use the ignition key to get a fault code:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light, which remains "ON" to see it begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat the process to be sure of an accurate set of flash counts. Then group the counts in pairs in the order of appearance. If an 11 code comes out that means the hall effect sensor inside the distributor has failed so you need to replace that to get spark again. It comes out easily once you remove the rotor and should cost about $40. It is the most likely cause of a no spark. A 55 code is always the last to come out: it means 'end of readout'. Let me know of any other codes.
One other thing to check would be to hear the fuel pump run for about 1 second inside the fuel tank when you first turn the key to run. If it does that, then the power supply to the coil will also be present while you are cranking it, so ignore your observation of there being 'no power to the coil'. That is a safety feature to prevent fires.

QUESTION: what else controls the main spark like that ,does it have a crank sensor? i havnt worked on one of these in a while. thanks for your help. i will check codes and hopefully it will be 11 and i will fix it. if not i'll let you know either way.

Answer
Hi Joe,
The hall effect sensor in the distributor is the only sensor on that engine, it combimes the necessary info for the pcm to 'drive' the spark coil primary winding. You didn't see any voltage at the spark coil if you measured across its two terminals, in any case. What you should do to verify power is getting to the coil is put your meter between the + post of the coil and an engine ground surface (or the battery - post) while you are cranking it over. But if the 11 code is present you won't see it because the ASD turns off the 12V for safety purposes. You should see it for about 1 second when you turn the key to run, just like the fuel pump humming even if the 11 code is present, but it won't reappear when you then crank it over, except for 1 second.
