Chrysler Repair: intermittant no tach or no odometer:95 Cirrus, chrysler cirrus, intermittent loss

Question
QUESTION: I have a common problem with my '95 Chrysler Cirrus i experience a intermittent loss of tachometer or odometer what is the fix?

ANSWER: Hi Ray,
The signals to run those two devices are digitized and arrive at the cluster on a pair of wires that also carry all the other data to run the gauges and warning lights on the cluster. So the wires coming to the cluster are not the issue if the other items work. I would suspect that the problem is on the circuit board of the cluster itself at the interconnections of the those specific units to the board (usually a poor solder connection ofter called a 'cold solder joint'). The input data for the two are generated at the pcm (from the engine rotation sensors) and the bcm (the transmission output sensor) units, so those could have issues as well, but unrelated to one another. But since both are acting up I would start at the cluster circuit board and reheat the solder joints for the two.

QUESTION: Is there a specific wire or wires to check {color code} or connector color to check?

Answer
Hi Ray,
No, the solder joints I refer to are internal to the cluster and would relate specifically to the speedo and the tach connections to the circuit board proper which are not likely wires but rather soldering pins from the units to the board. The wiring diagrams do not show specific details so you will have to look at how these units are attached to the board and solder accordingly.
If wires coming to the cluster were involved, as I explained, the problem would not be only related to the tach and speedo but would impact all the gauges and lights. And that you don't consistently loose both at the same time is further evidence that it is a local problem in the cluster unrelated to the wiring, unless by chance the sensors were failing as I mentionned but those would affect the performance of the vehicle at the time of their failure, which you didn't mention as having occured.
