Chrysler Repair: 94 dakota back fires when started cold, exhaust gas recirculation valve, port fuel injection

Question
QUESTION: I have a 94 Dodge Dakota that will back fire , cough and sputter when I first start it up cold and drive it immediately. If I let it warm up it's ok.I ran a code check and it came up 55 , end of code run.I thought TPS but not sure.

ANSWER: Hi Dave,
The 55 code just means "end of readout", i.e., there is no code recorded. Unfortunately I don't have expertise or manuals with the truck line, but if you can tell me the engine size, and whether it is throttle body or multiple point injected I might have some ideas. How long do you have to let it warm up before it is driveable?

QUESTION: It's the v-6 multi port fuel injection. I let it warm up about ten minutes.

Answer
Hi Dave,
Temperature will affect the required mixture and the temp sensors are therefor the parts that I would inspect to be sure they are accurate. There is a temp sensor for the coolant located usually next to the thermostat housing and there is also an intake manifold or 'charge' temp sensor on the manifold. These usually have a simple two-wire plug which when you lift the tab on the plug will release. Then you can measure the resistance between the two terminals of the sensor with an ohmmeter. When the engine is cold these should read in the range of 7.000-13,000 ohms and when the engine is at operating temp they should be 700-1,000 ohms.
The other mixture-affecting component is the exhaust gas recirculation valve which may be sticking slightly ajar when cold. So spray somw WD-40 on the valve stem and move it back and forth with the tip of a screwdriver inserted in the slot of the stem.
Finally, I would clean the throttle body throat, butterfly plate on both sides, and the side air passageway with solvent. Crud there can also mess up the mixture setting.
