Chrysler Repair: 2001 Sebring JXi - electrical problems, door locks, dash lights

Question
Hi Kevin,

My car started having electrical problems in groups starting about a year ago. They start out intermittent then finally go out completely. I think the first group was the door locks* and front internal lights including map lights. Second (I think) was the dash lights. Third was turn signals and radio**. Now the car is beginning to not start. When it happens, I consistently get the exact same result -- about 1-1/2 compression strokes then nothing. This seems to be when it's below about 50 degrees and the car will still start after about 15 tries.

I've checked for an error code about 50 times (key on-off-on-off-on <5 seconds), both when the car starts and when it won't start and there is no code. The dash lights seem normal. I do have the ABS disconnected/bypassed.

* The door locks/remote won't work at all. If I try to unlock the door by key, it locks again when I 'unturn' the key. I can keep the key turned and open the door but the alarm activates.

** I could usually remove the key and restart the car a couple of times to make the dash lights and radio come on.

I have asked someone else about this but without an error code, he had no advice other than to bring it into a dealer which I can't afford. I either need to fix it myself or let it sit.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Answer
Hi Jeff,
Let's take it one or two problems at a time. The interior lights and door locks are powered by fuse 5 behind the dash (10 amp), so check that one. The turn signals use fuse 15 (10 amp) in the box behind the dash, and fuse 20 in the box that is under the hood (20 amp), so check those. See if that improves anything, let me know, and then lets deal with the next problem which I can best address if you focus on all the specific details of only that one.
