Chrysler Repair: 96 A604-41TE limp-in: code 31?, 1996 chrysler cirrus, solenoid pack

Question
QUESTION: I am grasping for something.....I have a 1996 Chrysler Cirrus 2.5 v6 with the 41TE. We are in Limp Mode. This seems to be sparatic only when driven about 50 or more (running temp?) I took the entire harness apart checked ohms, replaced relay, changed fluid and filter. I had an initial code say shift solenoid D malfunction. When the vehicle is cold it runs through the gears like it should, second gear is a bit of a hard shift.  When I dropped the pan to change the fluid, the magnet had what I would assume to be normal amounts of build up on it,very very fine when I wiped the magnet off, it was a silky consistency.  I need to know if this is most likely an internal mechanical or electrical problem?
Info that might be useful:  Had new solenoid pack put in, the TCM connector by the engine feels very hot to the touch, relays are not hot.

Please let me know if you can help. There are several TSB's involving the A/T for this year of car.
Thank you for anything that might help.

ANSWER: Hi Erin,
I couldn't ID the fault code that is named ("shift solenoid D malfunction"). Do you have the number for it?  That would probably be the way to narrow down the possibilities as to the cause. Can you tell if any of the TSB's speak to these symptoms? I am not familiar with the temperture issues at the TCm plug so wouldn't know what to make of it.

PS Sorry for the delay as I just found your question in the 'pool' to which it had been referred by Kevin.

QUESTION: Thank you for the reply, I checked the codes again, The on board gave me a code of 31 the P code was rather unclear.  I did all the checking according to All-Data and came to the conclusion that it is the Shift solenoid assembly.  Before I change the assembly, I am going to take it to have the ports pressure tested.  Is it true that if I have a bad solenoid assembly that I also need to change the TCM, because it has been compromised?

Answer
Hi Erin,
I have not heard that the TCM would be compromised by a solenoid assembly problem.
On the fault codes, are you doing the readout with a reader that will tell you OBD-II codes for the transmission? If not, then get a free readout at an Autozone parts store or similarly at an independent garage for under $40. The '96 model year was in 'transition' between OBD I and II so both might be present. The 31 code if it was the pcm would be an evap system problem where as the  31 code for the tcm is the OD solenoind switch not responding properly. Ideally if you could get the OBD-II codes that confusion would be removed.
