Chrysler Repair: Chrysler Sebring LXi 1998: Code P0455, chrysler sebring, full tank

Question
I was hoping someone could help me out with this. I have a 1998 Chrysler sebring that has the check engine on and my mechanic said it reads the code P0455 evap leak. But they have checked everything and before it used to stall but now it doesn't it just sounds like it wants to when I go from high speeds to low speeds, but never stalls. The check engine light is always on and sometimes the brake light or gas light will come on when the brake isn't on and I have a full tank of gas. Its okay to drive because I mostly just drive it around to work and has not stalled on me yet but I would like to drive it more. Could this be the car computer? I have taken it to 3 mechanics so far and none have been able to tell me whats wrong.
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Rosa,
That code means there is a fairly large leak in the evaporative fuel collection system which is possibly due to the fuel cap being loose at the tank filler, or the cap might be defective, or there could be hose leak somewhere in the collection system, of the leak detection pump itself might be defective. If you want to verify that the code is still relevant, disconnect the battery for a minutes which erases any stored codes, drive the car some more, then go to an Autozone parts store where they will do a readout for free, usually. If the cap isn't loose, you could try a new cap; and if that doesn't fix the code then a shop with a leak detector can search for a leak, and also verify the leak detection pump is working. Those are the steps to curing this code.
