Chrysler Repair: 1995 Dodge Dakota: black smoke in exhaust, diagnostic capability, accuate

Question
My 1995 Dodge Dakota V6 is occasionally blowing black smoke from the exhaust and stalling.  What could the problem be to cause this from happening?

Answer
Black smoke is a mixture issue and probably the best way to find out why is to use the built-in sself diagnostic capability using the ingnition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light to see it begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat to be sure of an accuate set of flash counts. Then follow-up and tell the the counts in order and we'll go from there. Please tell me which size V-6 you have.
