Chrysler Repair: 96 Chrysler Sebring 2 Door Coupe:starter?, chrysler sebring, coupe v6

Question
Hey Roland. I've noticed you've had similar questions but i never stumbled across the same model with this occurance. I have a 96 chrysler sebring 2 door coupe v6. i've only had it for around 2 months and it has ran fine until one day i went to start it and it almost started and died. i went to start it again and it made a whinning noise, and has since made the same noise without starting. the weird thing about this is that it has not had any trouble starting before this even with the very cold weather. please let me know what the possibilities are other than a dead battery.

Answer
Hi Nathan,
If by 'a whinning noise' you mean the whirring sound of the starter motor but without the sound of the crankshaft of the engine rotating (cranking), then that indicates that the spring-loaded bendix gear on the starter motor is not engaging the teeth on the flex plate which is attached to the crankshaft. You could try turning the crankshaft a bit to get some other teeth on that plate into position which might have a better chance to mate with the teeth on the bendix gear. If that doesn't prove effective then try charging the battery to increase its voltage and thus increase the rpm of the starter motor which will drive the bendix gear out further and thus closer to the teeth so as to engage them. If that doesn't work then replacing the starter motor may be the solution.
If I have misinterpreted the sound you are describing please let me know.
Roland
