Chrysler Repair: 99 chrysler lhs lights flickering/power loss/battery discharged, 99 chrysler lhs, chrysler lhs

Question
i have a 1999 Chrysler IHS v6 3.5 high out put motor and while driving it home all my lights in the car flickered and then i lost power to the engine and it drained my battery and my head lights went dim him just wondering what could cause this to happen

Answer
Hi Stephanie,
It could be one of several possibilities:
The battery could have developed a defective cell or internal disconnect. Have you tried to recharge it? What voltage level did it show when it was re-charged?
The alternator could have failed but you would have seen a discharge warning light for sometime beforehand if that were the case/
There could be a short circuit of some sort that shorted 12v from the battery directly to any point that is connected to the 'ground' side of the electrical system, which would cause loss of power, flickering lights, discharge of the battery. That could be tested with a volt-ohm meter to see how much resistance the battery is seeing between its two cable clamps after disconnecting them from the battery. If you had an ohm reading that would tell us if that was the cause.
I wouldn't be able to tell you which of these is more likely, but those are the major possibilities, and once we eliminate 2 of the 3 we can focus in detail on the specifics of what remains as the overall cause.  If you get any hint of which, and you need some further detail, let me know.
