Chrysler Repair: 96 Neon speedometer issue, socket interface, board socket

Question
Hello, my 96 neon is having issues with the speedometer. It works most of the time but has been getting worse. The issue is that it cuts out, I find it happens more on bumpy roads which makes me believe that it could be an electrical issue. Also, when I bang on the cover protecting the gauges it seems to respond by coming back to life for second. How can I check the connectors going to the speedometer?

Answer
Hi Matt,
The speedo signal comes on pin 10 of the plug that is closer to the middle of the car which has a white/orange wire. Because it seems to be a loose connection I would suggest that you look at the solder joint of the that socket's pin with the circuit board. If you have a pencil-type soldering gun you can just touch the tip of it to the joint to reestablish a good connection. Then follow the trace to the speedometer head and do the same thing there at both joints, the other going to a ground connection. To remove it, take the top cover off the dash at both ends, then remove the cluster bezel. Then remove the 4 screws that hold it in place and pull out gently to reach the plugs for removal. Then disassemble the cluster far enough to reach the circuit board/socket interface.
