Chrysler Repair: 1996 Neon 2.0L: no radiator fans, crank sensor, radiator fans

Question
QUESTION: Thanks for all the help Roland.
Did as you suggested & found that it was the crank sensor that shut down after the engine warmed up. I am still having problems with the rad circuit, checkd all the wires & have continunity through out. Put in new ECT sensor, relay, fuse & fans still won't come on. Tested fans both work good single & in tandem.
Thks again for all your help.

ANSWER: Hi Roy,
My '97 manual shows a solid-state relay for the fans, which should turn them on when you ground pin 2 (light green) at the relay, so try that. Those relays have proven to be somewhat unreliable in the mininvans of those latter 90's (a recall was issued).  If they fire up, then I would suspect that the ect may not be getting warmed up sufficiently to activate the fans due to temp not reaching the critical turn on point. Perhaps you have some air trapped in the nearby thermostat housing? You could try  measuring the resistance across the terminals of the ect when you think the engine would want the fans, but that is rather hot 210F  and may not be reached in Canada in the wintertime. You could put a 500 ohm or so resistor across the ect plug to simulate a good hot ect and see if that causes them to come on. Do you get fans when you try defrost or AC, as you should? If they don't fire up when you ground pin 2 of the relay then check pin 4 for 12V from fuse #5. If that is there then I suspect the relay. It is located on the left inner fender below the radiator according to the '97 manual.
I am pleased you solved the warmed up stall problem.

QUESTION: Thks again Roland. The 1996 doesn't have the solid state relay, just the plug in relay in main fuse box. Checked this out & was able to turn the fans on by grounding #85 pin (blue/red wire), #30 pin has full voltage (grey wire). The green wire#87 as no voltage. Also checked with Napa & Chrysler & their system shows no relay other than the one in the fuse box.
The fans should automatically come on when I trn the AC on, but they do not. As to temperature, the engine heats up to 195F as this is the termostat opening, so the fans should come on.
Thks, Roy

Answer
Hi Roy,
Without a circuit diagram I am at a loss as to which wire does what. But you need to have one  wire connected to the fan, one wire connected to a high amp fuse, one wire connected to a low amp fuse, and one wire connected to the pcm to control the relay coil. I can't tell which is which from what you wrote to me. What does the NAPA show for those wires. It could be that the low amp fuse is blown as that is needed to power the relay's actuation coil. The other possibility is the line I mentioned earlier about the pcm not grounding the control wire due to the possibilities that I told you about.

Thanks to your suggestions I finally located the rad fan problem. Broken conection in the fuse box, tested okay without the relay, but when the relay was plugged in, it disconnected. Few drops of sodder solved the problem. Many thanks for all the advice. Best Regards, Roy

Very good sleuthing for that subtle problem, Roy. You are welcome.
