Chrysler Repair: 1995 Plymouth Grand Voyager: flaky cluster, plymouth grand voyager, soldering pencil

Question
My instrument panel on my 95 Voyager (mph, gas, temp, etc) used to flicker off and then come back on randomly. Now, it doesn't work at all. I had read that this was happening to many of the same models and was wondering if there was a recall or if you knew what it was. I was curious to see how much it would cost to repair.

Thanks :) Shannon

Answer
Hi Shannon,
I would start with the cluster proper. I know that there were problems with the solder joints between the cluster connector socket pin and the circuit board (connections would temporarily repair by wrapping on the top of the cluster bezel/dash pad, as I temp fix). The socket has 14 pins of which 9 are actually used, but if you get/have a soldering pencil my suggestion would be to remove the cluster, unplug it, and then disassemble far enough to see how the socket pins are soldered to the circuit board. Then touch eash solder connection with a hot iron the remelt and re-establish good electrical connections at that interface. Let me know exactly what is and what isn't working after you do this, and we can check specific wires to those circuits at their far ends for possible open or intermittent connections.

There are 8 pages from the service manual about the cluster, including how to remove it. I will xerox and postal mail you those if you will give me an address to send them to. If you would send be back three 44-cent stamps after you receive them, I would appreciate that.
