Chrysler Repair: 02 Sebring 3.0 V6 P0401 EGR code, vacuum line, wire colors

Question
I have a check engine light, and a code reading that says insufficient egr valve flow.  I have replaced the egr valve, and the check engine light came on after a day of driving, after I reset the code by disconnecting the battery for 10 mins.  The EGR has a single vacuum line on the top of the valve.  I haven't traced the vacuum line back to the solenoid yet, but I don't know what else to check to fix this problem.  I tried to clean all the carbon out of the passageway when I replaced the EGR

Answer
Hi Kurt,
The code not only means there might be insufficient flow, but also no flow at all. So that opens all the possibilities: the valve itself stuck, passageway clogged, vacuum supply, solenoid function. You did the first two so you need to check out the latter two possibilities. So check that the vacuum line is patent, and then verify that the wires are good to the solenoid:
the dark green/orange carries 12v from pin 6 at the pcm when the engine is running, and the gray/yellow is the control signal which should show variation from 12v to 0v as you rev the engine and let it drop back to idle. That wire it attached to pin 40 at the pcm. So check the continuity of those wires and the voltages. You might want to start by verifying that the solenoid clicks by touching/releasing 12V across its pins (+ on the pin otherwise attached to the dark green/orange wire) to listen for a click.

PS: Those pin numbers are from the '00 manual, so verify the wire colors are shown at the pcm plug.
