Chrysler Repair: 1999 LHS: shutsdown when warmed up, crank pulley, crank sensor

Question
I have an 1999 LHS with an intermittent shutdown problem it seems to be when it warms up. what about the crank position sensor & is there a way to test it. or is there anything else you can suggest
thanks

Answer
Hi Brian,
Yes, shutting down after warm up, only to recover after some minutes of cooling down is a symptom of a failing sensor, either a crank or a cam sensor. Try the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window to see if the mileage reading changes to show a 4-digit number preceded by a P. If it is 0340 that would indicate a cam sensor failure, and 0320 would be a crank sensor failure. You can test a sensor out electrically but you have to turn the engine over by hand using a wrench on the crank pulley, with the ignition 'on'. You measure between two of the three wires (the wire to ignore is the orange as it has a constant supply voltage) and if the sensor is good the voltage will pulse between 5 and 0.3V several times per revolution of the crank. Of course you would want to do the test when it won't run. But you can believe those P codes if you get either. Let me know of any other P codes as well.
Let me know if you don't get any codes and we'll try to figure out something else to try.
