Hi William,
The trans is in "limp-in mode" which it does to prevent damage when a malfunction is noticed. The trans will not shift above 2nd gear in that mode.
What you need to do is get a fault code readout using the data link connector which is behind a small door near the fuse box on the left end of the dash. The connector is blue and has 6 pins in a rectangular array. A trans shop with an OBD-I reader and data link plug can do the reading or an independent shop with such a reader can do, for under $40. Get the 2-digit code numbers, ask what they mean, what would fix it and for how much. Then write back and we'll compare that with what the '92 manual says for that code.

PS: May I ask a favor of you? I am seeking the recognition of being the 'volunteer of the month' at Allexperts. To do that I need your nomination which you can give by clicking on the "Thank/rate the expert" button below. That will take you to a page where you will see the question "Would you like to nominate the expert to be volunteer of the month?" If you would click on "yes" I would be most appreciative. Thank you and Merry Christmas!
