Chrysler Repair: transmission swap: Cirrus to Breeze 97, solenoid pack, chrysler cirrus

Question
Can the transmission from a 1997 Chrysler Cirrus go into a 1997 Plymouth Breeze? They are basically the same car. The Breeze does not have overdrive, but the Cirrus does. I am trying to replace the transmission in the Breeze because it is going into limp mode. I have changed both the input and output speed sensors

Answer
Hi Allan,
I am uncertain about the difference between the two transmissions: My understanding of the 41TE electronic transaxle is that it does offer the OD shifter position on all versions. So I would want to be sure that both are of the 41TE type to begin with. I don't recall seeing any version that didn't have the OD choice. Also I notice that the final drive ratio of the transmission depends upon whether it was mated to the 2.0L engine or the 2.4/2.5L engine (4.08 vs 3.91) so you might find your engine (if a 2.0) will be reduced in accelerating ability although maybe a little better mpg. The TCM from the donor vehicle should be substituted for the TCM in the recipient car to keep them mated. I would also wonder about the match up of the engine to the transmission which may be different. For all these reasons my suggestion would be to get a code readout of the present TCM in the Breeze to get a 4-digit number that might describe what is wrong with it. It may not require a rebuild but rather a replacement of the solenoid pack or cleaning of the valve body for example. You may find unforseen compatibility issues in the proposed change beyond those I have listed. You might inquire at a dealer parts counter as well to see what they might think about your proposal.
